Apple pledges to run its China facilities using mainly renewable energy

Apple announced Monday it is expanding its clean energy and environmental protection initiatives in China, including striking a forest conservation partnership with a prominent environmental group, and a goal of running 100% of its manufacturing facilities only on renewable energy.

Apple's manufacturing centers in China have come under the media spotlight for poor labor and environmental practices in the past

As part of the new initiatives, Apple will partner with the World Wildlife Fund for five years to protect up to 1 million acres of "responsibly managed working forests." This means the forests can still be harvested for pulp, paper and wood products, but in a sustainable manner. It also will keep the land out of the hands of real estate developers, who could otherwise turn the lands into residential or commercial developments. Read more...
