'Silicon Valley' shows progress in portrayal of women, minorities not so much

Following last week's addition of misogynistic super-douche Russ Hanneman, Silicon Valley pulled a 180 this episode by introducing Carla Walton, irreverent troublemaker and engineer extraordinaire.

From her very first appearance, it's clear that Carla, Pied Piper's newest hire and first female coder, can go toe-to-toe with the guys. She doesn't hesitate to prank Dinesh and Gilfoyle, calls out perceived sexism when she sees it ("I'm not a woman engineer. I'm an engineer") and is generally an all-around strong female figure
