A series of atmospheric events, beginning with El Niño and a string of powerful Northwest Pacific typhoons, have led to record heat across much of Alaska
The heat has caused rapid snowmelt that flooded the crucial oil trucking route between Fairbanks and Deadhorse, Alaska, which may jeopardize oil production in Prudhoe Bay.
It has also broken longstanding records throughout interior parts of the state.
Some locations in Alaska have had their warmest temperatures ever recorded so early in the year — soaring into the 70s and 80s in inland portions of the state.
